Library Assistant position at Webster Public Library

Webster Public Library - Library Assistant for Children’s Services

The Children’s Department is currently looking for a new part-time Library Assistant to help provide reference service, reader’s advisory, and other services in the Children’s Room as well as the main Reference Desk. This part-time position will report to the Children’s Librarian.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree.

Hours: Hours per week: 16.5.
Regular hours:
Tuesday 5:00-9:00pm
Wednesday 1:00-9:00pm
Friday 1:00-6:00pm
*Plus weekend rotation and fill-in shifts.

Major Duties:
  1. Provides reference and reader’s advisory services for children and families in the Children’s Room as well as the main Reference Desk.
  2. Assists the children’s librarians with special projects.
  3. Assists in advertising and merchandizing the collection and programs.
  4. Assists in the supervision of volunteers.
  5. Assists, plans, and conducts programs for children from birth – grade 5 independently and in conjunction with the rest of the Children’s Department staff as needed.
  6. Conducts outreach visits at community sites in Webster (ex: preschools, elementary schools, YMCA, etc…) as needed.
  7. Attends workshops and training sessions regarding the provision of library services.

Distinguishing Features of this Job Title: This is a paraprofessional position in which the incumbent works independently in assisting librarians in a variety of tasks. The librarians perform the more technical and administrative tasks of the department and may delegate the responsibility of overseeing an entire function to the Library Assistant. The employee interacts on a regular basis with other public libraries and agencies. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the librarians with latitude allowed for decision-making and independent action.

Starting Salary and Benefits:
The starting salary for Library Assistants is $15.56/hour. Vacation and sick leave on an accrual basis; 9 paid holidays per year; 2 floating holidays. Eligible for self-contributing programs for hospitalization and dental plans, deferred annuities, and long-term disability.
