We will begin with an overview of best practices for creating preservation-worthy digital content, as well as a review of available preservation solutions (including home-grown options and commercial products). Participants will then learn how to do an assessment of their own institutional organization and material, and determine a preservation strategy tailored to their needs. Lastly, we will review the PREMIS metadata model with an eye towards developing collection-level metadata.

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
• Understand the key requirements of scanning for preservation, including preferred file formats, resolution, and storage
• Identify important metadata components of a well-managed collection
• Assess your own institution with the goal of developing a preservation plan & policy
• Understand the basics of the PREMIS metadata model

Intended audience:
This course is intended for those interested in developing a more comprehensive preservation plan for their institution. Suitable to those new to the field as well as those with more experience managing and building digital collections.

In addition to overseeing the creation of digital content for Olin Library, she serves as project manager for many of University’s grant projects.
