Virtual Library Cards

There is a great (yet small) article in the Library Journal April 2011 issue about Libraries starting to accept virtual library cards.

LIBRARIES START TO ACCEPT VIRTUAL LIBRARY CARDS
Smartphone apps such as CardStar and KeyRing allow consumers to load onto their mobile devices all the plastic rewards cards dangling from their key chains, and more of these consumers are now using the same apps to load their library cards onto their phones.

This is presenting a growing challenge for the circulation desk, as library workers have to decide whether library policy acknowledges the virtual card and also whether a scanner can read it.

At Sacramento Public Library’s, CA, 28 branches, smartphone apps have been used only about 40 to 50 times to check out materials, but the library changed its circulation manual in October to make clear that “these are to be accepted as valid library cards.” The readers in Sacramento can scan the cards, and they work with most of the self-check machines, too.

“I think initially there was some concern about security, but we decided as an institution that...we wanted to make policy based on positive intent rather than expecting the worst,” Manya Shorr, the Central Library supervisor, told LJ.

Library of the year contest - sponsored by RRLC

Hello everyone,

Once again this year, RRLC will be sponsoring a National Library Week "Library of the Year" contest.

The contest, held during the late February - March time period, asks your patrons to tell us why your library is a "great" library and why they "love your library". Winners (announced during NLW) in each of three categories - school, public, academic/special - receive a $100 gift card, an engraved plaque and a 6' banner to hang in their library.. plus they are our guests and honored at our Annual Meeting in June. We also work with the library to ensure that the media, local funders, and others in NYS are aware of the winning libraries. Last year's winners were: Chili Public Library, Golisano Library at Roberts Wesleyan, and Barclay Elementary School Library.

People will be directed to our website to complete or download an online nomination form. The _number_ of entries doesn't matter as much as the _heart_ that is behind the nomination!

Book returned after 65 years!

Sound and Symbol in Chinese by Bernhard Karlgren, checked out from Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1946, found its way back to the shelves after a 65-year absence. It was returned by John J. Wolfe of St. Louis who located the book in his private library. Wolfe, a soldier recuperating from surgery at Fort Meade in 1946 after World War II, visited the library and “thought it [the book] might be useful.” Library officials report that Sound and Symbol in Chinese is in pristine condition and has the original due date card in the back.

The University at Buffalo Libraries seek an enthusiastic, energetic, highly motivated library professional for the position of Technical Services Associate in the Central Technical Services department. Staff in this area work with research and special collections library material using Ex Libris Aleph, the Libraries’ online integrated library system, and a series of locally-developed personal computer applications. Central Technical Services is responsible for the receiving, sorting, and distribution of internal and external mail, shipments, and freight. Receipt of print monographs, government documents, print periodicals and non-print formats is a high priority that requires dedicated staff hours. The Technical Services Associate receives and distributes incoming mail for all CTS areas assisting with opening/sorting of print periodicals, print monographs, government documents and non-print materials. The incumbent organizes and distributes outgoing material for CTS areas including processed monographs and periodicals, repaired and rebound materials, and materials headed to the Libraries Annex. He/she completes end-processing for all outgoing materials in print and non-print formats adhering to local standards; monitors the availability and extent of electronic journal holdings; assists in problem resolution. The Technical Services Associate creates order records for monographs and serials using print and online methods of ordering; receives and updates holdings records for continuing resources in the local integrated library system. The incumbent prepares material to be sent to the commercial bindery and processes returned materials. He/she performs copy cataloging of continuing resources when Library of Congress catalog records or catalog records created by other libraries are available in OCLC. The Technical Services Associate hires, trains and supervises student assistants to receive and process incoming materials. The Technical Services Associate works in a collaborative environment which is intellectually and technologically dynamic where staff are empowered to act independently. The incumbent supports the Libraries' mission statement which values open communication, respect for diverse perspectives and good working relationships. He/she will be expected to take advantage of opportunities for continuous learning and improve job-related skills by participating in available staff training and development opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications:

An Associate's degree or successful completion of two years of college is required. Three to five years of academic library technical services experience can be substituted for the educational requirement. Demonstrated proficiency of working in an online environment is required. The incumbent must be able to problem–solve and provide analytical solutions using existing guidelines, policies and procedures. Must be able to work independently without day-to-day supervision and function effectively within a team setting. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required.

Preferred Experience:

Two to three years of library technical services experience is preferred. Supervisory experience with student assistants is preferred.

We will begin with an overview of best practices for creating preservation-worthy digital content, as well as a review of available preservation solutions (including home-grown options and commercial products). Danielle Mericle is the Digitization Lab Coordinator for the Digital Consulting and Production Services Unit at Cornell University’s Olin Library. In addition to overseeing the creation of digital content for Olin Library, she serves as project manager for many of University’s grant projects. She has conducted numerous digitization workshops and presented papers at Digital Library Federation, ALA, and the National Archives of Peru. Danielle Mericle holds an MFA from Syracuse University.

Circulation policy and user agreements will be available for review; Librarians Jennifer Little and Pat Maxwell will discuss their experience circulating the Kindles as well as the results of their Kindle user's survey.

Jennifer J. Little is a reference librarian and the coordinator of library instruction at the College of Brockport, where she has worked for five years. She held previous reference and instruction positions at the University of South Carolina Aiken and Taylor University (Indiana). Her research interests include effective library instruction methods and cognitive learning theories as they relate to the online environment. Although she spends most of her work days inside, she loves to be outside skiing or biking or hiking especially in her birthplace, the Adirondack Mountains.

Pat Maxwell (MLS, Southern Connecticut State University) is the Systems Librarian for the College at Brockport, primarily responsible for providing Aleph ILS services and support. She recently implemented the AquaBrowser Library catalog, assisted in the Brockport Big Read program, and is presently working on a relational database for the Brockport Writers Forum audio/video collection. Pat’s research interests include human-computer interaction, with a focus on e-textbooks.

Studies show cheating on homework assignments and on exams happens at an alarming rate. As high school and college students gain more tech skills, the ways in which they cheat evolve. Should students be allowed to drink a soda during an exam? Listen to an iPod? Have a cell phone with them? Students are using all these devices (and more) to cheat! Come to this workshop to learn what constitutes high tech cheating and see statistics on the extent of the problem. Take a tour of the paper mill, textbook solution, and test sharing web sites. See the videos, technologies, and actual devices that students use to cheat. Get tips on how to curb high tech cheating.

Linette Koren is the Librarian/Liaison for the Kate Gleason College of Engineering and Golisano Institute for Sustainability at RIT and also serves as the Graduate Services Coordinator. She has created and delivered workshops at RIT on Google, various social networking sites, and Cyber Shopping.

The Geneva Public Library has been awarded a New York State Education Department Public Computer Center grant of $244,517. The grant will fund a two-year program to improve and expand the computer resources the library makes available to the public and to provide computer-skills instruction to area residents. The program will create 3 jobs at the library for two years.

The library plans to add and replace computers, improve its public access services, develop video conferencing, enable its website to be read in Spanish translation as well as English, and provide computer classes for adults. Computer classes and the installation of new equipment are expected to begin this fall.

The jobs created by the grant include a full-time Library Assistant. The position will be responsible for helping to manage the program and provide direct service to the public. The application deadline for this position is July 31, 2010. A part-time Application Training Specialist will be responsible for computer-skills instruction. A part-time Senior Computer Service Assistant will be responsible for technical support of the library's computers. All positions are civil service and require applications to be sent to the Ontario County Human Resources in Canandaigua.

The library is one of 30 libraries in the state to receive a Public Computer Center grant. The grant is part of the New York State’s Broadbandexpress@yourlibrary project to help low-income, unemployed, underemployed, and other vulnerable populations in upstate New York. Broadbandexpress@yourlibrary will provide more than 860 computers in 30 libraries and five mobile training centers across 41 economically distressed upstate New York counties with populations totaling 6,655,824 (2008 census).

The Broadbandexpress@yourlibrary project is being funded by a $9.5 million matching grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration to expand computer access in public libraries across New York State. The funding is being provided through the Federal American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA), and the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program.

New York State Education Commissioner David Steiner said, "Libraries are vital to our communities and our economy. The increased broadband capacity, training and online resources funded through this grant will provide more New Yorkers with access to essential online information for work, healthcare, education, and citizenship as well as E-government resources."

"What librarians and libraries do everyday is vitally important work," said State Librarian and Assistant Commissioner for Libraries Bernard Margolis. "Yet, even though New Yorkers turn to their public libraries more in difficult economic times, libraries themselves have suffered cuts and reductions to their valuable services. This grant will enable our libraries to continue to do critically important work and to expand the opportunities, education, and services that high speed Internet provides to the unserved and underserved in our communities."

The American Library Association Annual conference was held in Washington, DC the last week of June. 19,513 people attended this conference. There were 6,688 exhibitors as well. This was up from the attendance in Chicago the year prior. Numbers in Chicago were 22,762 attendees and 6,179 exhibitors. (Just a reminder - Library Assistants have a Round Table at ALA and are very active).
On the closing day of the conference, Library advocates gathered on Capitol Hill for the first ever National Library Advocacy Day! Over 1800 people attended this event! After the rally, attendees visited their local representatives.
What a GREAT attendance for this important advocacy event!

NYC Library Card Act into Law

New York City recently signed into law the Library Card Act. This Act requires that the NYC Department of Education supply library card applications and information about how to obtain a library card to students entering kindergarten, sixth grade, ninth grade, or when transferring to a new school.
"Libraries are an integral part of our education system," says NYC Council member Jimmy Van Bramer, who introduced the act. "It's undeniable that children who read more and use their libraries do better academically. As an educational resource, it is important to use every opportunity to bring libraries and students together".

Three of NYLA’s 2010 Legislative Priorities have passed the Senate and all three bills could potentially save libraries and their taxpayers money, yet they remain bogged down in the Assembly Ways and Means or Rules Committees. The three bills are:

Cooperative Bidding for Public Libraries and Library Systems (Passed Senate 3/8 – In Assembly Rules Committee 6/8)

This legislation (S.3903 Oppenheimer/A.6154 Paulin) would add public libraries and library systems to list of public entities, like cities, towns, villages, BOCES, school districts, that are allowed to engage in cooperative bidding. Cooperative bidding allows libraries and library systems to go out to bid for services or products jointly instead of individually, thereby getting a better price and saving money.

Public Library Systems Eligible for Local Government Efficiency Grants (Passed Senate 6/3 – In Ways & Means 4/20)

The bill (S.6875A Oppenheimer/A.10412 Bing) would expand eligibility to apply for local government efficiency grants to include public library systems. Currently libraries are allowed to apply, but not library systems. By allowing library systems to apply for these grants, they can fund new or expand shared services or other cooperative initiatives that would save libraries money.

BOCES-Libraries Internet Partnerships (Passed Senate 3/15 – In Ways & Means 6/16)

This bill (S.4634 Oppenheimer/A.8673 Gunther) would authorize BOCES to contract with public libraries or library systems for internet services. BOCES would be able to add libraries and library systems to their bids for internet services, thereby lowering the price and obtaining higher speeds for internet service.

Another NYLA priority bill is also pending in the Senate and held in Assembly Ways and Means:

Public Library Construction Grants

This legislation (S.4248 Aubertine/A.6155 Paulin) (Reported to Ways and Means 6/3) would modify the public library construction grant program to enable grants to be used to purchase vacant land as well as lower local match to 25% of project costs for libraries in high need areas.

The Legislative Session is due to end either this week or next, so I urge you, your staff and trustees to contact your state Assemblymembers as soon as possible to get them to pass these cost saving measures for libraries.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Part-time (35 hours per week), 12-month, temporary position on a one year renewable contract. This is a great article. The word Paraprofessional has been a term used for library support staff for many years. It's a term that can really upset Library Workers who feel that they are not a "para- professional" - They are just as much as professional as the MLS staff.
The 2010 Library Journal Paraprofessional of the year, Allison Sloan, made a case for using the term "Paralibrarian" to her colleagues.

Helping the local community - in Baltimore, MD

Terri Summerhill shops online for her weekly groceries at Enoch Pratt Free Library’s Orleans Street branch in the new Virtual Supermarket Project funded by $60,000 in federal stimulus money to Baltimore’s, Food Policy Task Force. The program, unveiled in early March, offers laptops at the library where residents can order from a local grocer and pick the items up from the Orleans Street or Washington Village branches. The branches are in the city’s biggest “food desert” areas targeted by the city Health Department for their scarcity of grocery stores and nutritious food options.

2010 NYSLAA Conference

The 2010 New York State Library Assistants Association (NYSLAA) conference was held June 9th - 11th in Corning, New York. The conference started off on Wednesday afternoon with tours available at the Corning Museum of Glass and the Benjamin Patterson Inn Museum. Each tour lasted about 2 hours and cost only $4.00 to attend. Wednesday evening NYSLAA held a Mixer at the Corning Incorporated Headquaters. The Mixer included a wine tasting, snacks and a tour of the sculptures at the headquarters.
Two workshops were held Thursday during the day. Most of the workshops were held at the Radisson Hotel in Corning. There were many different workshop to choice from when registering for the conference. (I'll post any and all conference workshop summaries on this blog when they become available). Thursday evening we were honored with a glass blowing demonstration followed by dinner and entertainment all held at the Corning Museum of Glass. Our conference badges gave us free admission to the museum along with a 10% discount at the museum gift shops.
Friday another two workshops were offered. Again, there were many different workshop to pick from. Friday afternoon we ended the conference with a luncheon at the Radisson. Our keynote speaker was Lee Welles.
It was another GREAT conference!
Next years conference is being held at SUNY Geneseo. If you have never attended a NYSLAA conference - I highly recommend you do! Next year's conference will be close to us. Hope to see you all there!

Theft in Caledonia

On Sunday afternoon this past weekend, the Big Springs Museum in Caledonia (20 miles southwest of Rochester) was the victim of a theft which was discovered last night. The museum was robbed while staffed, of several military objects including a Civil War Era surgical Kit (Wade and Ford Set C 1861), a Nazi helmet, several WWII era medals, and two Hitler Youth knives. We are trying to locate photographs to share.

The perpetrator distracted our docent. The objects were in locked cases, and the locks were cut.

Please be on the alert for this type of event in your museum.

New RRLC Library Assistants Schedule

This group meets four times a year at the RRLC office, located in Fairport, NY.
We are a core group of people who discuss workshop ideas, community service and Library Assistant opportunities on a state and national level.

For 2010, two out of the four meetings will be held in the evening. Each meeting last no longer than 2 hours. Some meetings are about an hour and a half.

The Department of Library and Information Studies at SUNY’s University at Buffalo
is pleased to announce the initiation of an MLS online degree program, with
courses beginning in fall 2010. The MLS degree program is accredited by the
American Library Association. The online program was developed to serve the needs

24-student cohort and will enroll in two courses each semester, and one course in
each of two summer sessions, for a total of six courses each year. They will
follow a prescribed program of study, but have the option to substitute up to two
three-credit courses from Buffalo's MLS course offerings for any of the online
program courses (with the exception of the Department’s required core courses).
Students accepted into the program should plan to complete the 36-semester
hours-degree in Master of Library Science in two years. Faculty in the department
and well-qualified, experienced practitioners will teach the courses. Prospective
students are encouraged to apply early since there are only 24 spaces. For more

Fall support staff workshop

The PLS 2009 Fall Support Staff Workshop was held Friday, October 30th.
There were 33 people in attendance for this 1/2 day workshop. Each attendee received goodies from Brodart and The Library Supply Store.
The morning started off with introductions of all attendees, so many of us talk to each other on the phone but have never actually met. It's fun to put faces with names.
Our first presentation of the morning about Book Repair was given by Leah Hamilton. Ms. Hamilton is the General Collections Conservation Supervisor for the University of Rochester, Rush Rhees Library. This workshop provided cost effective strategies to maintaining book collections with quick and easy to learn techniques.
The second presentation of the day was about Advocacy and was presented by Kathy Miller, Director of the Rochester Regional Library Council and Jennifer Morris, Director of the Pioneer Library System. Ms. Miller is also currently the President of the New York Library Association and Ms. Morris is a former President of the New York Library Association. Their workshop was designed to help staff members develop advocacy skills and learn how to promote their libraries on a local and state level.
Everyone seemed to enjoy both presentations and were happy they attended.
Our last workshop of the day was an informal presentation given by Lorraine Lander regarding SUNY Empire State College. Ms. Lander gave people the opportunity to ask questions about this unique college experience.
Thank you to everyone who attended. If you have suggestions for workshops/presentations you would like to see given at a Support Staff Workshop, please let me know. I love to hear suggestions/request.

Library Journal will honor one support staffer with its 11th annual Paraprofessional of the Year award in its March 1, 2010, issue. Sponsored by Brodart Library Supplies & Furnishings, which underwrites the $1500 cash prize and a reception to honor the winner at the American Library Association conference in June, the award recognizes the essential role of paraprofessionals, now the largest constituency of library workers, in providing excellent library service. It places special emphasis on the efforts of the winner to further the role of paraprofessionals in the library profession. The winner will be profiled in the March 1 issue of LJ.

Nominating criteria

The criteria for LJ's Paraprofessional of the Year are excellence in performing their job, including contribution(s) enabling the library to best serve its constituents and/or its community (whether town, college/university, school, or corporation), the encouragement of reading and the use of the library's resources, a commitment to free access to information for all, and the candidate's work to build networks, organizations, and/or groups to back excellence in library work and new career paths for support staff, and improved communication and the breaking down of barriers between support staff and the MLS librarians with whom they work. Nominating letters should name the candidate and describe in 500 words or less why the nominee deserves the award. Supporting letters and accompanying material will be considered, but the nominating letter itself will be of prime importance.

Dear Library Advocate, as you may know, the Governor has proposed mid-year budget cuts to close a $3 billion budget deficit. The proposal includes a 10% across the board cut to all state aid programs like Library Aid, which will result in a $3.3 million reduction in funding for library services. School Aid will be cut by 4.5%.

The proposed $3.3 million reduction in Library Aid is on top of the $8 million cut imposed back in April and the $3 million cut sustained last year. If the proposed cuts are approved, it will reduce Library Aid to $88 million or 1998 level of funding. With library usage continuing to increase and people of all ages depending on libraries to improve their literacy, computer and internet skills and the unemployed using libraries to search for new careers and employment, now is not the time for further cuts for library services.

I strongly urge you to contact your state legislators to ask them to reject the Governor’s proposed cuts. Libraries have already done their fair share towards reducing the state’s budget shortfalls, other alternatives need to be used before asking the library community to take further cuts. These proposed cuts impact all types of libraries and library systems, public, college, schools, etc.

National Save for Retirement Week

This week is National Save for Retirement Week.

In 2009, the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate unanimously approved resolutions designating October 18-24 as National Save for Retirement Week.
The resolutions seek to increase financial literacy and raise public awareness of the retirement-savings vehicles available to all workers.
Research shows that more than half of all workers in the United States, 53 percent, have less than $25,000 in total savings and investments, excluding their home and defined benefit plans (pensions).
With longer life expectancies and rising costs, especially for health care, it is critical that Americans understand the importance of saving for their future - now.

written by Barbara Fister.

Hurry, hurry, hurry!!! There is only 1 week remaining for you to contribute your favorite recipes to be included in the NYSLAA cookbook.

Remember-this is a fundraiser to help offset some of the costs of the 2010 conference to be held in Corning. We want to be able to keep the registration costs low so that more libraries can afford to send their library assistants (YOU!) to attend this annual opportunity for continuing education and networking.

We thank all of you who have submitted recipes so far, but unfortunately we have collected only 39 recipes, not nearly what we had been hoping to receive. If we don't collect enough recipes, we won't do the cookbook, which means the conference will cost you more $$$.

The Fall Support Staff Workshop is later this month.
Have you signed up yet? Currently we have 21 people signed up at attend.
This years workshop has two different parts to it.
Part one is from 9:15 - Noon and it covers, Book Repair and Advocacy.
Part two is after lunch and is a workshop about Empire State College.

Now - let me guess.....You don't think you need to hear about advocacy - right?
Well - I would have to disagree.
Libraries are in need of positive energy 100% of the time.
If you work in a library - then you need to be advocating for libraries.
Libraries are a great community access that need to be promoted as much as possible.
Plan on attending and learning how you can improve your skills from two local experts.

Support Staff workshops are great opportunity to meet other support staff from the libraries within the Pioneer Library System.

I'm not sure how many of you are NYSLAA (New York State Library Assistants' Assocation) members, or if you are, how many of you subscribe to the NYSLAA list serv.
The past week as been a very active week on the NYSLAA list serv.
The discussion has been about getting new people to run for office.
An organization is only as good as the people who are running it.
It's been a very lively group to listen to. People are very passionate about NYSLAA.
A suggestion was made to have virtual meetings. This would make it easier for the members of the Executive council to attend meetings. Or atleast that is someone of the members thoughts.

Anyone who is a member of NYSLAA can be nominated for a council seat.
If you are interested in running for office, please let me know.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month

September is Library Card Sign-up Month–a time when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.
Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children.
Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.
Library cards are generally free to those living in the library's service area. In most cases, borrowing privileges are granted on the spot. Some libraries may require some form of identification, proof of residency or the signature of a guardian.
